One person's forecast is often wrong, but pooling many independent guesses is surprisingly accurate. This is the wisdom of crowds, confirmed by more than a century of research.
① Galton's ox (1907, Nature)787 people at an English country fair guessed an ox's weight. The median was 1,207 lb against a true 1,198 lb — less than 1% error.
② Condorcet's jury theorem (1785)If each person is slightly better than a coin flip and judges independently, the majority's chance of being right approaches 100% as the group grows.
③ The Wisdom of Crowds (James Surowiecki, 2004)Four conditions make a crowd smart: diversity, independence, decentralization, aggregation.
④ Prediction markets (Berg et al., 2008)The Iowa Electronic Markets beat opinion polls on election outcomes about 3 times out of 4.
⑤ Social influence hurts (Lorenz et al., 2011, PNAS)When people saw others' answers and revised, the crowd became less accurate.
So TWB hides other people's picks until you vote (independence), lets anyone join (diversity) and pools every vote live (aggregation). How often the crowd is right is shown as Crowd accuracy at the top.
